Sing, Sign & Play

Sing, Sign, Play: A Unique Resource for Inclusive Learning

Welcome to Sing, Sign, Play, an exciting and inclusive resource created as part of a project by the National Youth Choir of Scotland. This innovative collection of songs, rhymes, and games is designed to make singing, BSL signing, and playing accessible to everyone.

Why Sing, Sign, Play?

Participation in these activities goes beyond fun—it supports children’s development in meaningful ways:

  • Social skills: Encourages teamwork and cooperation
  • Cognitive development: Improves memory, discipline, and concentration
  • Physical coordination: Reinforces steady beat-keeping and rhythm
  • Emotional well-being: Provides a sense of achievement and happiness

Research by experts like Nina Kraus (“Of Sound Mind”) has shown that keeping a steady beat supports literacy skills, while the work of Usha Goswami highlights how rhythm in songs and rhymes benefits children with dyslexia.

Through signing, children are introduced to British Sign Language (BSL), giving them the opportunity to practice and engage with a new mode of communication. Please note that regional variations in BSL signs may apply.

About the Resource

The Sing, Sign, Play resource brings together music, British Sign Language (BSL), and fun, interactive games to create a rich, engaging experience for children. Developed with the help of schools across Scotland, each song in the collection is supported by:

  • BSL instruction videos
  • Audio tracks
  • Game demonstration videos, many featuring children in action

The recordings are demonstrations, not performances, as they were created after just three short sessions with each school. The goal is to inspire and enable everyone to participate in these joyful activities.
